Book Time (book-time.club) is a small, independent service. This page says what we collect, why, who else handles it, and what you can do about it. Questions and requests go to hello@book-time.club.

What we collect

• Your account: your name, your email address, and your password, stored only as a one-way hash. If you sign in with an emailed link, there is no password at all.
• Sign-in sessions: while you're signed in we keep a session record with your IP address and browser type, so we can recognise the session and spot misuse.
• Your creator page, if you have one: your username, display name, picture, bio, links, reading-list URL, featured books and games (with your first score on a featured quiz), theme, any custom page design you write, and a copy of your email address.
• Challenges: the challenges you create or join, the books you log against their prompts, and your points. Your account name appears on a challenge's participant list and leaderboard, and as its host if you run it. For a public challenge that means anyone; organisers can hide participants or show only a count. Leaving a challenge keeps your entries in it.
• Invitations: if a challenge organiser invites you by email address, we store your address with the invitation so they can see who it was for.
• Reading lists and games: the public list URLs you paste (Goodreads, Fable, Livraddict), the books we fetch from them, and the wheels, duels, quizzes and tier lists made from them. Anyone with a game's link can open it and see the list it came from, and can change it unless a creator features it.
• Our browser extension, if you use it: when you ask it to, it reads the reading list on the page you're viewing, which can be a private one, and sends those books to us.
• AI assistants: if you use Book Time through an AI assistant (our MCP endpoint), we receive the list links it sends and record which assistant app made the call.
• Usage analytics and error reports: the pages you view (with any sign-in or invite codes removed from the address), the buttons you use and their labels, the books picked in games, and errors the site runs into. We collect these with PostHog, hosted in the EU, linked to a random ID kept in a cookie and in your browser's storage. PostHog may also record how pages are used (clicks, scrolling and what's on screen, with anything typed into forms masked) so we can fix problems. Your IP address reaches PostHog with these events, and PostHog may use it to estimate a rough location, such as your country. When you're signed in, some events are linked to your account ID, and your email address is sent to PostHog to decide which beta features your account sees.
• Abuse protection: we count requests per IP address, and for sign-in, account emails and AI page edits also per email address or account, so no single source can flood the site. Most counters delete themselves within an hour; the daily limit on AI page edits lasts a day.
• Server logs: Cloudflare keeps our server logs (the addresses requested and any error messages) for up to a week, so we can fix problems.

What we don't collect

• Payment information - nothing on Book Time costs money
• Your logins for Goodreads, Fable or Livraddict
• Precise location, such as GPS

We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising.

Why we use it

• To run the service you asked for, as our agreement with you: your account, sign-in emails, your page, your challenges and your games. To make an account we need your name and email address; without them we can't create one. Everything else is optional.
• Our legitimate interests: keeping the site secure (sessions, abuse protection, logs and error reports), understanding how it's used so we can improve it (analytics), deciding which beta features an account gets to try, and featuring creators around the site. You can object to any of these - see Your rights.

We don't make decisions about you by automated means alone.

Emails

We only email you about your account: confirming your address, sign-in links and password resets. No newsletters, no marketing.

Where creator pages and books appear

If your creator page is live, books from your reading list can appear on your own page at your book-time.club address and - mixed in with other creators' - on the Book Time homepage, credited to your name and username and linking back to your page. We only ever show books your own page already publishes, never your whole list. Live creator pages are also listed for search engines, suggested on the homepage, and can come up under "discover a creator". If you would rather not be featured on the homepage, email us and we will remove you.

Who else handles your data

• Cloudflare hosts the site, our database, caches and logs, sends our emails, and runs our AI features. The database is in Western Europe. The caches and the network itself are global, so some data is processed outside the EU; Cloudflare is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and its data processing terms include the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. • PostHog provides analytics and error reports, hosted in the EU. See PostHog's privacy policy.
• Google Fonts. Our own pages and emails serve their typefaces themselves. The one exception is the card Book Time shows inside AI chat apps, which loads its typeface from Google, so Google's servers see the IP address of whoever views it. See Google's privacy policy.
• Image hosts. Book covers, and images creators add to their pages, load straight from the sites that host them - such as Goodreads, Fable or Open Library, or a site the creator chose. Those sites see your IP address and browser.

AI features

Some quizzes are written by an AI model, and creators can ask an assistant to edit their custom page design. The book details or page design involved, and any instruction you type, go to a model that Cloudflare runs for us through Workers AI; Cloudflare doesn't use them to train models. Cloudflare's AI gateway keeps a log of these requests so we can fix problems, and for quizzes we also send the prompt and the model's answer to PostHog to check their quality. Please don't put personal information in your instructions.

Cookies and browser storage

• A sign-in cookie, set only once you sign in. It's shared across book-time.club addresses so your creator page knows it's you.
• PostHog's analytics cookie and browser storage (ph_…), holding the random ID described above.
• Your recently used reading lists, kept only in your own browser.

There are no advertising cookies. With a tracker blocker, everything on Book Time keeps working. If you block all cookies and site storage, signing in stops working, and so does everything that needs an account.

How long we keep it

• Your account, page and challenge data: until you ask us to delete your account.
• Sessions: they end a week after you last use Book Time, or straight away when you sign out.
• Games: about 90 days after they were last used. Games featured on a creator page are the exception - they're kept so links already shared keep working, even after the page is deleted. Ask, and we'll remove one.
• Abuse-protection counters: an hour, or a day for the AI page-edit limit.
• Server logs: up to a week.

Your rights

Wherever you are, you can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop using it for analytics. If you're in the EU, EEA or UK these are your rights under the GDPR or UK GDPR, along with the rights to restrict processing and to take your data elsewhere. Email hello@book-time.club from the address on your account, so we know it's you, and we'll reply within a month (or tell you why we need longer). You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Deleting your account removes your account, your sessions, your creator page, your challenge entries, and any challenges you organise - including other people's entries in them. Games you featured stay up so links you've shared keep working; ask and we'll remove those too. We also delete your analytics history at PostHog. Database backups roll off within 30 days.

Children

You need to be at least 13 to make an account. If your country sets a higher age for agreeing to data processing yourself (up to 16 in parts of the EU), you need a parent's or guardian's permission. If we learn that a child under that age has an account without it, we'll delete the account.

Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes too. If a change is significant, we'll say so on the site before it takes effect.

By using Book Time you agree to these terms. They're short.

The service

Book Time is a free set of tools for readers and book creators: a wheel that picks your next read, duels, quizzes, tier lists, reading challenges, reader accounts and creator pages.

Accounts

You need to be 13 or older to make an account (see Children above). Use an email address you control and keep your password to yourself; you're responsible for what's done with your account. Each account can have one creator page, and it goes live once you've confirmed your email address.

Usernames

Usernames are first come, first served. Some are reserved. If a page's email address isn't confirmed within 7 days, someone else can claim its username. We may take back a username that impersonates someone or uses a name that belongs to someone else.

Reading lists

We read public reading lists from supported platforms so you can play with them. We don't store your credentials for those services, and on our own we can't reach anything you haven't made public. Book Time isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Goodreads, Fable or Livraddict. Cover images and book descriptions belong to their respective owners.

Your content

What you post - your bio, links, picks, challenges, challenge entries and custom page designs - stays yours. You let us host, show and share it on Book Time, including on the homepage, in share images and in link previews, for as long as it's on the site. You're responsible for it. Don't post anything illegal, hateful, harassing or deceptive, anything that impersonates someone or tries to collect other people's details, or anything you don't have the rights to. Custom page designs are cleaned before they're shown: scripts, forms, frames and embeds are removed. Don't try to get around that.

Reporting content

If you see something on Book Time that you think is illegal or breaks these terms, email hello@book-time.club with the link and what's wrong. A person will look at it, decide, and tell you what we did. If we remove your content or suspend your account, we'll email you saying what we did and why, and you can reply to ask us to look again.

Challenges

Whoever runs a challenge sets its rules and can remove participants from it. Points and leaderboards are for fun and have no cash value.

AI features

AI-written quizzes and AI-suggested page edits can be wrong. Check them before you publish them; what you publish is yours.

Fair use

Don't overload the service, scrape it, or get around its limits or security. Our assistant (MCP) endpoint is for you and your AI assistant, within the same limits.

Affiliate links

Many buy links on Book Time - on creator pages, sample games and challenge suggestions - go to Bookshop.org with our affiliate code. If you buy through one, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Bookshop.org's own policies apply once you're there.

Availability

We aim to keep the service running but can't guarantee uptime. We may change or retire features, for example to keep the site secure or affordable to run. If we ever close Book Time, we'll give at least 30 days' notice on the site and a way to get a copy of your data.

Ending things

You can stop using Book Time whenever you like, and ask us to delete your account. Deleting it also deletes any challenges you organise, along with everyone's entries in them. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.

Liability

Book Time is free and provided as-is. We're liable as the law requires for harm we cause on purpose or through gross negligence, and for death or personal injury. Beyond that, because Book Time is free, we're not liable for indirect losses or for lost content or data. Nothing here limits your rights as a consumer.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top changes when we do, and if a change matters, we'll say so on the site before it takes effect. If you don't agree, you can stop using Book Time and ask us to delete your account.
